 Calaveras County is best known for Mark Twain’s famous story “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County.” It is also home to many world-class attractions and activities including Bear Valley Mountain Resort, Stanislaus River Rafting, Sierra Nevada Fishing and Boating, Big Trees State Park, Columbia State Park, Stanislaus National Forest, some of the best gold panning sites in the state, along with an abundance of vineyards and breweries.

 

 


Every season offers its share of great attractions and activities. In the spring, summer and fall, visitors can enjoy the hiking and biking trails that take visitors through the Calaveras Big Tree State Park and the Stanislaus National Forest, with the ancient giant Sequoias. For the adventurous, there is plenty to do with the professional golf courses, world-class fishing, water skiing, camping, horseback riding, whitewater rafting and much more. The winter months offer downhill skiing at Bear Valley Mountain Resort, cross country ski trails, and miles of snowmobiling trails, ideal for experiencing the tranquility of the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

Calaveras County also offers historic gold rush towns including the charming, 1850s village of Columbia, award-winning vineyards, micro-breweries and pubs, art galleries, antique shops, and museums. Visitors offered the opportunity to learn how to pan for gold or explore the natural limestone and crystalline caverns that are open to the public in Calaveras County.
